East Coast / D.C. Trip

So, I just got back from a business trip to the East Coast… DC, Virginia, and Maryland.

AND… it was my first time — EVER!

You can read about the “business” part of the trip HERE. However, this post is more on the general experience itself -and- the experience of traveling with a 3 year old for the 1st time in an airplane.

First… memories from Snapchat

So… in this trip, Nathan grew up… A LOT. Like, he matured.

Flying was the hardest part because Nate was TERRIFIED about being up so high. During the 2nd take off coming home, he squeezed the life out of my fingers. Poor kiddo.

All in all though, this blog post will be short because I took a lot of video that I’m hoping to drop as a post of its own. I guess the gist of this post really is that… I was in awe of DC. Virginia was fun. Maryland was beautiful.

I got to meet up at my business partner’s home and finally try Maryland Crab Cakes with Old Bay. The families meshed well. Traveling required a lot of patience from Nathan and he stepped up to the plate. Also, super helpful, was both grandmothers came along for the trip and were godsends in their own rights in helping tame the boy during his three year old moments.

There was a moment I wanted to share, despite the disjointed content in this post.

I touched the Washington Memorial for a few seconds. Then, rolled my kiddo in his stroller toward the side where there were seats.

I sat there and cried in gratitude, awe, and a bit of heartbreak for our nation.

I thought to myself, “I sure hope all this is here when Nathan grows up.” Our nation is supposed to be the UNITED States. Yet, recently, I fear we’ve gone about things all wrong… trumping tolerance, diversity, and all that in a way that causes divergence rather than convergence.

In many countries with diverse backgrounds, diversity doesn’t define them… their commonalities do. I found this as a theme in my business trip as I was a keynote and breakout speaker for a conference. The physical therapy profession is better off by uniting over what is agreed upon, rather than fighting over disagreements that are shallower than skin deep.

And… I thought to myself how this country used to be known as “the melting pot.” Well… in a melting pot, we don’t identify individual substances… we mix them all in together.

TOGETHER.

I hope we can get back to that… rather than picking pieces from and out of the pot, creating discord while we do it. I hope, that… is still around when Nate grows up. I hope to teach him that, too.

I have a lot more thoughts to follow… but really, those thoughts are for me 🙂  … for now.

Top Dad Blog, Again?!

So… Again… I wasn’t expecting this.

Hahaha… pretty cool! And, truly unexpected. As I said from the start, the reason I started Daddy In The Raw was as a chronicle for my boy & as an encouragement to all of you out there who may be in pursuit of the same lifestyle goals.

Well, in any case, I just wanted to share that little bit. Also, I’m pretty certain I’ll start logging some video blog sessions. After some of your feedback regarding my Snapchat Stories, I figured I may as well use the Memories function… SO, if you’re on Snapchat:

ADD ME ON SNAPCHAT 😉

A Wedding and A Surfboard

So…! It’s been pretty busy. There is constantly stuff I want to share. Honestly, I’m starting to consider switching my format into a video blog vs. written content. Two reasons: (1) it’s faster, and, (2) it’s just faster. LOL! If you’re a parent… you get it. Which reminds me of a funny thing I saw on Facebook re: people saying they are “Tired” & don’t have kids.

And, in case you want a quick laugh, check this one out. Nathan cannot get enough & will dance exactly like it!

Okay. Enough distractions. On to the post!

So, my best man got married! CRAZY. Haha, it all went so fast. I found out. Three months later. Boom. Married. I also had the pleasure of being his wedding MC. I probably should’ve jabbed a bit more at him; but, honestly, I prefer weddings to be clean, joyous, and a pure celebration. No need for shenanigans… no matter how socially expected it may be.

All to say, seeing my best man married got me thinking about my boy. In as possibly quick as 15 years, he could get married. That, was a daunting thought. It means I have 15 years to make sure he turns into an honorable, kind, caring, self sufficient, and socially contributory man.

I am VERY glad I have my wife in this quest. After all, she is a #HeroWife.

In addition to that big development, I also recently took up surfing.

See… years ago, I was a hardcore surfer. I mean, when the surf advisory was up, that means I was out surfing that nonsense. There were waves I rode that I had no business even thinking about. Many times, I’d come out of these obscure local spots where only a few people were looking on. After I was done, people would shake my hand and tell me I did great.

I was all confused. They were just waves. That was, until I turned around… and, saw the MONSTERS I was riding. Surfers were like little dots. And, I was one of those dots!

Ultimately, back in 2009 or early 2010, I went out to one of my favorite spots. Unfortunately, things went poorly. Tide went out, reef got exposed, and the waves jacked up 50% higher than anyone was prepared for. I sat there, bobbing around and dodging huge waves… wondering if I would ever get back in. Plus, we were getting swept out to the kelp beds due to the current. NOT GOOD.

After that time, I basically quit surfing. I felt it was too selfish of me to go on doing stuff like that.

Well… this summer, one of my best buds dragged me back into the water. The water temperature in San Diego was 75 degree F… warmer than the air temperature, many mornings and evenings.

Suffice to say, surfing is back in my life. And, it’s really nice to be back in the water. It’s also nice to feel like a smarter/wiser surfer. I feel I’m actually better at surfing now, even after taking such a long break. I think what has changed is that I’m much more judicious of the water conditions and the waves I go for. I need to be safe as much as I need to be having fun.

It’s not about me, anymore.

What connects surfing and fatherhood came when I started noticing a LOT of dads taking their kids out to learn how to surf. It spanned all ages; from 7-8yo to mid-teens. It was really cool to see. The kids were TALENTED, too. Now, other than teaching Nathan about the world at large and introducing him to martial arts… I can’t wait to take him surfing!

Oh, it was also kinda cool to see this blog on Top Dad Bloggers, again!

And, this…

Top Work At Home Dad Blogs

As mentioned in my “professional/personal” Blog @DrBenFung, I had the surprising pleasure of being contacted regarding the inclusion of my blog to be listed as a “Top Work At Home Dad Blog!” Other than rehashing what I already wrote there, it was funny because the apparent journey that I was found to be a “work at home dad” was through my original blog — not this one. Nevertheless, it appeared that they followed that footprint into, well… here, at Daddy In The Raw.

Suffice to say. It was truly a surprise!

Obviously, this dad blog isn’t a monetization project. It’s just here to log, document, quip, whine, commiserate, and otherwise, encourage & empower those who may be on a similar journey… or, those who are considering the plunge.

Well, I’m glad people are noticing. If you’ve been encouraged, please drop me a line. Tweet me, message me, comment below, email me… I’d be so happy to hear from you!

Alright. That’s it! Have a great weekend!
